Zidane’s brutal headbutt in the 2006 World Cup final is rendered in the distorted form of the skull from Hans Holbein’s painting “The Ambassadors” (1533). The idea of the skull and death plays a subliminal role in football, and gladiatorial yet fleeting, ephemeral moments such as Zidane’s outburst lie at the core - the skeleton of the sport - which, as a form of entertainment, also distracts us from transience through a new medial dimension.
