2022 Exhibition Archive
The competition received entries from artists living around the UK, Europe, and the world, including Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Japan, Lithuania, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, South Korea, Togo, the United States, and more.
All of the submissions were reviewed by a selection panel made out of personalities from the worlds of art and football: former England footballers David James MBE and Gordon Taylor OBE, art critic Sacha Craddock, Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger, and curators Jo Cunningham, Mark Doyle and Kirstie Hamilton.
“The Football Art Prize judging was a thrilling experience” says footballer and commentator David James. “The depth of content was quite amazing, not just in material presentation, but subject matter too. In the past I had questioned the reason why football wasn't being represented in 2D art to a level of its popularity. What I saw was a recognition that football touches nearly all aspects of life and is visible in social areas across the world, beyond the stadia.”
“The quality of work entered for the Football Art Prize 2022 was astounding and it made our job as judges very challenging” agrees curator Kirstie Hamilton. “It was great to see the passion and love for football coming through in so many different ways and also to see how well the artists had executed their ideas.”
“The entries reveal the participants’ love of our most popular participant and spectator sport which is football” adds Gordon Taylor, former English footballer and chief executive of the Professional Footballers' Association. “Football at its finest illustrating the joy of the game, it’s inclusiveness and diversity from grassroots to international football.”
“From the realistic to the imagined, the fantasy to the broken dreams. There is something for everyone” concludes curator Jo Cunningham. “For me the shortlist demonstrates the passion felt for football from the grassroots level to the higher echelons of the game. Football and art bring people together and that is seen in the final selection.
