This is a tale of my first life drawing lesson, at Hammersmith College of Art under the influential eye of Ruskin Spear. Spotting me shyly peering at the model from the back of room, Spear beckoned me gently to the very front, seating me 3 feet from a naked backside. He simply whispered “you can’t draw what you can’t see”. Those early lessons taught me to find the tone, focus and geometry of whatever I find in front of me.
